The Healthy Masculine — Yep, It’s a Thing. Here’s how to understand it.

We all know the toxic masculine. But what about the healthy masculine? Here’s a simple analogy to describe how it’s healthy forms contributes to wholeness

Meanings of the Page of Swords

Last year, when I was moving house, I was also in the throes of discernment between – what is the difference between the Yin Feminine, and the Yang Masculine?  (Because, of course, that’s what one ponders while unpacking boxes. Or not.)

Intellectually, I understood the distinction. The Yin Feminine—present in all of us regardless of gender—is the energy of beingness, flow, stillness, nurturing, receptivity, intuition, emotion, cycles of life and nature, randomness, and creativity.

The Yang Masculine—also within everyone—is the energy of structure, logic, neutrality, practicality, rules, systems, protection, boundaries, and creation.

I believe our balance of these dual energies is essential to wholeness. For much of my life, I lived almost entirely in my Yang Masculine to unhealthy levels—steeped in reason, practicality, and constant doing, and that overemphasis left me in constant stress and depression.

It wasn’t until I allowed myself to embrace the Yin Feminine—stillness, flow, and emotional connection—that my anxiety began to ease. In that shift, I came closer to what my authentic self had been longing for: balance.

I believe our balance of these dual energies is an integral part of wholeness, personally and societally.

Is the masculine’s rational, do-do-do, easier for you? We’re programmed that way.

The Yin Feminine, though, can feel scary in our society because it can seem chaotic. Intuition, emotions, flow — they all ask us to loosen our grip and step into a space that can feel unpredictable. Emotions can swing from joy to sadness to anger — terrifying! Flowing with life? That means surrendering to the unknown — yikes! And intuition? It arrives out of nowhere, impossible to explain. What even is that?!

And so… the history of the feminine has often been taken out on those in female bodies, with the Patriarchy trying to suppress this “chaotic” energy through the toxic masculine — forcing, bullying, and overpowering with witch burnings, denial of rights, stripping of power, and more.

Even as society has modernized and granted more rights to women (though some have recently been taken away), the qualities of the yin feminine — nurturance, flow, intuition etc — are still treated as “less than” as exemplified by our go-go-go, hyper-rational, money-over-care culture, so is it a stretch that these energies can be challenging when we’ve been conditioned otherwise?

And in the present day — oppressive governing forces can make it feel like we’ve regressed in the underbelly of the toxic masculine, which is on full display in the world stage. So much so that we may think: there ain’t nothing good about the masculine.  (Though I would argue that it’s not just toxic masculine, it’s toxic-everything-energy… But that’s for another time.)

So then, what is actual healthy masculine energy? If you’re wondering — here’s a simple way to see it, through a little analogy.

A simple, everyday analogy for the Healthy Masculine

As mentioned, I was moving house and I was unpacking my collection of spices and started cramming them into the kitchen cabinet. I kept wondering, why do I have so many dang jars of spices? In my hurry, I just shoved them all onto the shelf. Once everything was in, I stepped back and saw nothing but chaos. How was I supposed to find anything in that mess? Just looking at it stressed me out.

And then I thought — I need a spice rack! So I went online, ordered one, set it up, and voilà! My stress immediately went down. Everything was organized, structured, easy to find. No more chaos.

And that’s when it hit me: the spice rack is the healthy masculine.

In this analogy, the spices represent the feminine. Each spice carries its own creativity, flavor, and potential yumminess. But without order, they’re scattered everywhere, and executing on my cooking creativity becomes a hassle.

The healthy masculine provides the structure — a container for the feminine’s creativity to exist and shine. It organizes, makes sense of things, and supports, so we can actually use the spices with ease.

That is healthy masculine energy.

The healthy masculine acts as a container for the feminine within us. It allows us to hold our energy, create safely, and bring structure to our ideas so that creativity can manifest.

How the healthy masculine’s limitations can be helpful

A society with healthy masculine energy isn’t a bad thing. We need rules and systems — traffic lights to tell cars when to go or stop, laws to protect us and keep us safe. Currently, the repressive powers-at-be are using ‘rules’ against us, and to control us. But we need healthy rules and systems, it provides a framework for how to be in community with each other.

And in our personal lives, limitations can serve us too: rules are boundaries — with others, and even boundaries within ourselves, as we walk the path of seeking our truth.

It’s a bit like asking the question: “Who are you?” You could be anyone or anything in this world — which is an overwhelming number of possibilities. Sometimes we need to wander into that wild feminine space, surrendering our minds, dropping all notions of who we think we are so we can glimpse what lies beyond what we know.

But staying in that vast unknown for too long can be too much. So maybe we choose just a few paths to explore in answering “Who am I?” and discern what truly makes sense for us. By placing some limits around who we are, it becomes less daunting, and instead feels safer, and more grounded in reality.

This oscillation between the feminine and masculine is the cycle of wholeness. When we lean too far into one or the other, we risk losing ourselves. True balance comes from a deep respect between them — the masculine holding the feminine, and the feminine offering gratitude in return.

Just like the spice rack and the spices: one provides structure, the other brings flavor. Together, they create nourishment.

May it be so.
